How did you guys meet?

Caty: John and I met when we were 13 at a church camp called Impact in Nashville, TN.

Tell us about your engagement!

Caty: My group of friends typically gets together on Labor Day weekend every year. This year we planned a trip to Chattanooga, TN and I hadn’t thought anything of it. What I didn’t know is that John planned the whole thing and was going to surprise me with an engagement on the walking bridge. Surrounded by so many of my friends and almost all of my family via FaceTime John got down on one knee while we were walking on the bridge and completely surprised me. It was a weekend full of celebrating and everyone was in on it except for me!

What was the vision for your wedding?

Caty: We wanted a laid back wedding with a fun, but relaxed vibe. I like the earthy or “boho” styled feel so we tried to tie that in where we could with fall colors and lots of greenery. Our venue was perfect for us because you could watch football on the patio or step on to the dance floor. We wanted to make sure that every guest enjoyed our night as much as we hoped to! We had the perfect amount of people because we truly got to talk, dance, or hangout with everyone at some point during the day and into the night.

What details were used to create your theme?

Caty: I wanted to stick to fall colors but also keep it simple at the same time. I love the look of classic black and it goes with everything so that’s why the bridesmaid dresses and the guys suits were black. We used gold in a lot of our decor as well. To me you can’t go wrong with gold decor and it was classic but also fit with our boho vibes. As far as color goes I had pops of burnt orange and golds with lots of greenery. I wanted something a little different than a bouquet of roses. I told my florist a couple flowers that I liked, that I loved greenery and trusted her from there. Melissa put together my dream flowers with out hardly any assistance from me. Our invitations were greenery themed and so where our table runners paired with ivory fabric. Allenbrooke provides so much amazing decor items to pick from as well as plates, glassware and so much more. We had a custom vroom vroom balloon that added a fun prop and a wooden sign Igor guests to autograph instead of a traditional guestbook. Our dog Cleo did not attend but we had cups with her on them which we loved so much. Our wedding was the day before my birthday so we decided on a fun-fetti cake with cupcakes as well. We wanted to keep it fun in all aspects while also doing a few things our way instead of the more traditional way.

Where did you splurge? Where did you save/DIY?

Caty: We splurged on small things like take away gifts for the guests like our Cleo cups and customized decks of cards. We also splurged in fireworks for our exit. When we heard that was an option we knew we wanted them. Using Etsy was a must for us as far as saving costs on things. For example I printed all of our programs from a customizable Etsy template. Since I am an event coordinator myself I tried to use as many connections as I could within the business combined with my own knowledge on what I’ve seen that I could not do without or didn’t mind not having.

What was it like working with Melissa Marie Floral Designs?

Caty: Melissa is such a talented artist. I am an event coordinator and have been recommending her to my own clients for years so when it was my time to get married she was the only florist I considered. You can give her an idea and she will create something so beautiful and unique. I like that she thinks outside the box and uses flowers that aren’t used all the time. She’s got an amazing eye for pulling things together that I would have never considered.

What words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning?

Caty: Don’t worry about pleasing everyone on your guest list. Once you decide on something don’t look back, move on to the next thing. Take care of small things as early as you can that way when your wedding gets closer you can focus on more pressing matters. Most importantly focus on what will last after the day is over. Your spouse, your family and your friends. Your wedding is one day and then it’s over and you leave that weekend with your person you hope to spend together with so remember that when deciding on things and during the actual day!

Can you share any special moments or highlights from your wedding day?

Caty: We decided to do a 3:00 ceremony so we could avoid a first look and still have sunset pictures. At first I was nervous because that’s a long day but it ended up being perfect. You spend so much time and money planning this day so it’s nice to not feel rushed after the ceremony was over. We had time to talk and hang out with everyone at our wedding and we loved that.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding?

Caty: Planning our wedding was stressful, but every person on our team worked so well together and really helped us pull together our perfect day. John and I look back often and ask each other how we pulled that off, but really it was much more than just us and a lot of credit goes to our team. It was truly the most amazing day for so many reasons and one we will never forget

Caty!! Your wedding is an absolute dream! Thanks to Caty and John and Melissa Marie Floral Designs for sharing this boho barn wedding with us!
