Erin and Alex are two color lovers who DIY’d their vibrant backyard wedding during COVID. Set by the pool in their parents’ backyard, this couple infused color and fun into their micro wedding. All of the florals were DIY’d by the bride, choosing hot pink peonies as her statement flower (which perfectly matched her heels!) The groom also joined in on the DIY activities and made a three-tier Rice Krispy Treat cake, with a colorful Fruity Pebble layer in the middle!

How did you meet?

It all started (as many love stories do) at Chick-fil-A. Alex was working at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in St Louis that was going through an ownership change when Erin and a corporate team arrived to help! After a month, Erin and the team left, and we really didn’t talk again until 5 years later when Erin innocently downloaded an app called Marco Polo (insert dramatic music here). Alex, minding his own business in St Louis, suddenly got a notification that this random chick Erin was now a part of his Marco Polo community when a crazy idea ran through his mind, “What if I say hi?!” Now I know what you’re thinking… DID HE DO IT?! And I can come confirm … he did. You’re welcome world.

What is your proposal story?

‘‘Twas a Christmas ago, when all through the zoo, Alex confessed “Girl Imma marry you!”
Fast forward a year when Alex would say “Hey! We should visit the zoo today!”
So all through the zoo we laughed and we skipped till along came a polo that I couldn’t resist. It played “Simply the Best” from that tv show we love and he slid on a ring that fit like a glove. **spoiler. I said yes

Tell us about your wedding vision.

All the colors! and a little bit of Sleeping Beauty. I wanted it to be fun and bright and beautiful.

Tell us about your attire choices.

I wore a tiered gray tulle skirt with a tank top and the brightest pink heels!

We had a Kentucky Derby Formal dress code so everyone came out with the cutest sundresses and hats which made it special and fun since we only had so many people that could make it.

What was most important to you two? Was there anything you chose to splurge on or skip?

Food was the most important and I didn’t want to make any guests (my parents included) have to work during the wedding preparing anything. We made sure the catering included servers and staff to help so everyone else could relax and enjoy themselves.

What were your favorite parts of the day?

I loved my flowers, my dress and really everything as far as the decor was concerned. We also did a photo booth which was a huge hit. My fiance also decided to jump in the pool in his suit after the wedding reception.

Tell us about your wedding cake.

My husband actually made our cake! Neither of us are big cake people but we love Rice Krispy Treats so he made a 3 tiered rice Krispy treat cake with 1 layer being fruity pebbles (His favorite).

Describe any DIY projects you did.

I made our invites and our thank you cards.

Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?

We offered a Zoom link for anyone who couldn’t physically come due to COVID. Alex’s dad actually lives in the Philippines so it was special that he could still watch the ceremony even though he was a world away.

Instead of having dancing (neither of us enjoys), we decided to provide games! We had a Target aisle worth of board games, cards, dice, and then we actually made our own Giant Jenga and Corn Hole boards.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

Don’t be afraid of trying your hand at making your own bouquet! Oreally anything else. And don’t be afraid to go against the grain! I DIY’ed a lot of my wedding and that made it even more special. I also went with things that made me happy and what was a good reflection of my relationship with my now husband.
