There is no easier way to make your home look lush than by adding foliage – Monstera branches or palm leaves instantly bring life and a touch of the tropics to any living space, and we all know the effect of a good Fiddle Leaf Fig! If you’re planning an event (engagement party at home perhaps!), want to make an impact and are giddy about greenery – I have just the thing!
Have a rummage around your backyard (or find a friend who is willing to help!) and see what you can find. We have an entire fence lined with fishbone fern and it worked perfectly for this DIY. If you don’t have this pretty weed abounding in your yard, there are many options to substitute in. Try small gum branches for a more relaxed feel, soft pine for a Christmas-y feel or ivy for some romance.
You can make these well in advance as they’ll last a good 36 hours (always best to test one out a few days in advance), and because they’re so quick to make, you can cover any wall you choose in no time! Grab your secateurs, we’ve got a feature wall to create!
What you’ll need:
- Chosen foliage (I picked fishbone fern, and plenty of it!)
- Scissors/secateurs
- Double-sided tape (or blutac)
- Ribbon, if you choose to decorate each wreath
- Florists’ twine (if you don’t have twine, you can substitute string or fine wire)
What to do:
Step 1. Cut your foliage and make sure it’s clean and insect free! Cut small pieces of twine, approximately 5-10cm long.
Step 2. Begin making your wreaths! If using fishbone fern, be aware the stem does get less flexible towards the base. Fold the tip of the plant around and hold it in place with your fingers. Grab a piece of twine and firmly secure the two ends together. Be gentle (but thorough!); as you secure the wreath, you may find if the tips are soft they can break easily.
Step 3. Trim the end of the fern (and the wire) to make a neat teardrop wreath. Do your best to make varying sizes of wreaths, as this will create a greater impact on the feature wall.
Step 4. Using your double-sided tape or blutac (being mindful of the wall surface), attach your wreaths to your chosen surface, fitting the different sizes together like a puzzle. If you’d like to make the wall seem more structured, play about with neat, even rows and similar sized wreaths. If your feature wall is outside, remember to use a little more tape or blutac so that the wreaths stay secured.
These look absolutely gorgeous for a botanically themed event, and are an incredibly easy way to make an impact. Play around with different foliage to see which will suit your theme best – you can even try making tiny wee ones to place on gifts for your guests! Place your wreaths around signage, on the front door, even in the bathroom! You can never have too many and they will look stunning wherever you cluster them!
