A Great Gatsby Inspired Mountain Wedding

LIEB PHOTOGRAPHIC

Jackie & Todd’s Gatsby inspired wedding in the Blue Ridge mountains exudes an understated vintage chic. With art deco details including their stationery suite, flower covered chocolate Guinness wedding cake (how delicious does that sound??), a champagne tower and dresses for the bride and bridesmaids with a 1920s silhouette; and all in a color palette of dusty blue and cranberry, with splashes of platinum, it is quite simply heavenly!

When choosing on a location for their day, the couple decided there was no other option than to go back to Jackie’s roots in the Shenandoah Valley. “I’ve missed my mountain vistas ever since we moved away to SC and needed those views on our wedding day to feel at peace and connected to God. There is something about the mountains that just revitalizes my soul.

We both love being outdoors so knew we would need an outdoor ceremony location but also are aware that the evenings in the valley can get very chilly, and you can’t always predict April weather. Thus we also needed a location with an indoor reception space that could be converted for ceremony space as well if needed. Wanting to keep the views of the mountains in mind and sunsets was key and after touring The Columns at Six Penny Farm there was no competition. The manor house and reception hall are of Jeffersonian architecture, providing that glamorous and elegant vibe with surrounding mountain views and lush green grass. ”

“It was not the silhouette I had browsed for or tried on until that moment. Everything else was A line or ballgown; but with these I didn’t feel like I could move or stand very close to my groom. I knew I wanted to feel comfortable and confident. So I tried on the sheath dress and fell in LOVE instantly! My mother wasn’t sold though because she still wanted more drama, aka a full skirt. So our consultant brought over a tulle skirt and I actually loved that look as well! I felt like the princess I always wanted to be on my wedding day. So at the end of the day when we punched the numbers it was still under our budget to do the dress and skirt! This option gave me two completely different looks that were perfect for my Gatsby mountain wedding!”

“Peonies are my favorite and fortunately we were married when they were in season! Again I wanted a neutral bouquet so that my bridesmaids’ could capture the colors of our wedding with the cranberry tones. I love that our florist was able to encompass succulents and rannunculous in my arrangement and that the groomsmen had real berries for their boutonnières!”

“I wanted my ladies to look their best that day which meant different dress styles on each of them while still giving off a more elegant vibe, and consequently varying shades of dusty/steel blue. The four of them also had some element of sparkle to stay true to the Gatsby glam vibe. “

“The groom wore a charcoal colored Italian suit that was perfectly fitted with the slim style, again giving off that era appropriate prestige of a perfectly fitting suit. As bride and groom we wanted to be more neutral rather than wear color so he donned a platinum colored tie. Finally we finished him off with some dusty blue socks with palm tree print to reflect his upbringing in Maui.”

“The first look is a moment we always want to remember. Both of us were tearing up in anticipation before we even saw each other. When I came around the corner of the house and saw the back of Todd and his leg bouncing in excitement I got really emotional and had to control my face for the pictures. When I tapped him on the shoulder and he turned around with a huge smile, laughs and tears I was swept up in the perfection of the day and it was finally our time! His reaction to seeing me was more than what I had expected and it melted me. He took in every detail, spinning me to see the back, running his hand over the beading, taking my earring in his fingers to see it close and my hair comb, even stopping to smell my bouquet.”

“Our cake was designed by a family friend, who happens to be the owner of Paradox Pastry. We have had her chocolate Guinness cake before and thus knew we needed it as a sheet cake. For the cutting cake we wanted something lighter and went with the Italian Cream. It was amazing! We wanted Art Deco design in white and platinum which is exactly what we got! It was amazing and so yummy!”

Pearls of wedding wisdom from the bride…

“For us it became a priority to focus on the guest experience, while also holding true to what we really want because it’s our day. Food is super important to us so we went with an amazing caterer that was still reasonably priced and customized to include a tater tot bar – because who doesn’t love tater tots? We also recommend going the route of a day of coordinator! Because we had Alyssa we were able to enjoy and be a part of the day rather than handle any details.”

Tell us a little bit about your photographer….

“Photography was our number one priority for a vendor as we know these images are how the two of us, our family and friends, and future generations will remember this special day. My Matron of Honor had found Lieb Photographic for her 5 year anniversary and recommended we meet with Michelle. I loved her style/look online with how bright and light her and photos are and once we met and connected in person it was a perfect match! Michelle doesn’t pose people in awkward/uncomfortable positions and thus you can see how truly happy and natural we are in our photos! We can honestly say that we could not have selected a better option for photographer that felt like an extension of our wedding party, and connected us with most of our other vendors!”
