Grey & Pastel Wedding Feast at Poortjie Saal by As Sweet As Images

This wedding really embodies a gentle elegance for me. Soft greys combined with dreamy pastels, a light and bright country venue, and long wooden tables. It’s a perfectly neutral backdrop for the main event – the exchange of vows followed by a veritable feast, commissioned by the foodie bride and groom, Mariza & Duan. From cocktail hour roosterkoek fresh from the fire, to a table groaning with sweet treats, these lovebirds broke bread and shared love with their friends and family – and all in a venue that turned out to have a very special significance. Now that’s wedding fate! Our friends, the wonderful As Sweet As Images, captured every one of these lovely pics.

Love Story
We met seven years ago. We were both invited by friends as plus ones for drinks. Neither of us liked the other! Duan thought I was loud and I thought he was a nerd! After that we kept on meeting, and before we knew it, we were inseparable.

The Proposal
Years ago, Duan said he would propose with a lucky packet ring. One Saturday morning, he woke me up with coffee in bed and said I should pack a suitcase, as we were flying to Cape Town. He said it was for his work, but when we got there he suggested we go for lunch and then to Riebeek Kasteel. That evening, we drove to Allesverloren for sundowners, where Duan produced a lucky packet and asked the question! The ring came out of the packet, but luckily it wasn’t made of plastic!

The Venue
We had our wedding at Poortjie Saal in Heidelberg. I saw some photos of the venue online, and after visiting it we were sold. I phoned my mom to share the venue choice, and as I explained the location, my mom told me that it was the exact same venue she and my dad had their reception at 35 years ago!

Wedding Style
It was very important to both of us to have good food and good wine in a comfortable environment. Both of us like simplicity. We had the idea of long tables with friends and family sharing food and wine. Our colour scheme was greys and light pastels, with long exposed wooden tables and loads of candles.

Wedding Details
The food at our wedding was amazing; we paired it with excellent Kaapzicht wines. Everyone who knows us knows our love for food and wine. To share that with our loved ones on our big day was very special.

The Flowers
Soft and natural. Nothing over the top but beautiful.

The Dress
I went with my mom to a bridal shop just to get an idea of styles. The third dress I put on was a mermaid style dress by Pronovias. That was it – mom cried, I cried and I said yes to the dress!

The Bridesmaids
I had four bridesmaids, each so unique and different, I could never choose a style for them. I just gave them a colour palette of greys and soft pink. Zelna, Heidi, Annelize and Madeleine looked stunning.

Memorable Moment
We chose to see each other before the ceremony. Duan stood with his back to me, when he turned around and saw me for the first time it was an emotional and magical moment.

Proudly South African Details
While we were off after the ceremony to take photos, our guests were entertained with live music, cocktails and snacks, which included fresh roosterkoek straight from the fire with honey and cheeses.

Best Decisions
Making the decision early on to stick to our budget and making the day about us.
