Details for a Romantic Bohemian Wedding

If there is one phrase that could sum up a romantic bohemian wedding, it would be doing things differently! The atmosphere of a romantic bohemian wedding is laid-back; often, a romantic bohemian wedding is called a wedstival rather than a wedding. Guests may see the bride and groom barefoot throughout the ceremony, and you can bet wedding attire is casual rather than traditional.

Some couples hosting a romantic bohemian wedding will hire the services of a food truck in order to provide snacks for guests. Sometimes called boho chic, this ceremony will feature outdoorsy decor, with lots of greenery, fresh flowers, and even braided hair topped with flowers rather than a traditional veil.

Food for a Romantic Bohemian Wedding

Let’s talk about the romantic bohemian wedding cake. If you’ve heard the term naked cake to describe one that uses icing only between layers with perhaps a smidge on the outside, then you understand why this is the perfect cake for a romantic bohemian wedding. The naked cake may be decorated with fresh fruit rolled in sugar, or some brides choose to place fresh flowers on the cake.

When it comes to other foods added to the reception menu, consider vegetarian dishes. A fruit pizza is a colourful and healthy food offering for guests, particularly kids. You may also want to consider hummus and possibly pita chips among other healthy yet tasty dips. A food truck is also a great way to feed your guests.

What to Look for in a Venue for a Romantic Bohemian Wedding

When choosing a wedding venue, think rustic, organic, and minimalist. For many romantic bohemian brides, the venue is set in the outdoors with a pastoral feel. Look to a venue in nature, and you’ll find the perfect backdrop that way.

Some ceremonies take place on the beach or perhaps in a backyard, but those aren’t the only venues to dream of. A wooded area with a waterfall can create the perfect natural cathedral for your romantic bohemian wedding. A barn is a venue that can be enjoyed year-round or even in inclement weather. A botanical garden or a greenhouse at a conservatory is also a great place for your nuptials.

Wedding Dresses & Accessories for a Romantic Bohemian Wedding

The romantic bohemian wedding dress is one that is casual, flowing, and comfortable. At the same time, the boho chic wedding gown may also feature graphic lace as well as a flowy skirt. Most boho chic wedding gowns are knee length, but brides may also find them in long lengths and even tea length dresses.

Most of the boho chic wedding dresses feature large, floral print lace over a white or off-white shell. Sleeves may be long or ¾ length; they may be cap sleeves, or no sleeve at all. Some brides will pair these beautiful, flowy dresses with a pair of boots, particularly if the wedding is set in fall. However, some brides go barefoot or they may even wear sandals as the bride did in this shoot.

Colour Palettes for a Romantic Bohemian Wedding

One great colour palette is based on taupe. Accent colours may be sand, and olive is a great accent colour. Add Peacock Blue for a little pop, and you’ve got the perfect colour palette for a fall romantic bohemian wedding or a boho wedding at the beach.

A summer affair calls for more vibrant colours, including reds, purple, sky blue, and orange. A butterscotch yellow is also an eye-catching colour that will prove the perfect accent colour for a Boho wedding. A spring or early summer Romantic Bohemian wedding calls for vibrant, yet somewhat softer colours. This includes pastel yellow, sage green, teal, and royal blue.

Groom Style for a Romantic Bohemian Wedding

Groom style for a boho wedding is just as eclectic as that of the bride! Grooms may marry in a dress shirt and nice jeans, or choose sandals and shorts for wedding gear! Some grooms even ditch shoes, especially if the venue is set on a beach.

However, if grooms do wish to dress up just a tad, a dress shirt paired with casual khakis and suspenders is a perfect choice for a romantic bohemian wedding. Another option for the groom includes a dress shirt paired with a vest.

Grooms dressing for a romantic bohemian summer wedding may choose a suit in seersucker or linen. Should the groom wish to wear jeans, chambray is a great lightweight fabric that looks dressy but is also perfect for outdoor nuptials.

Wedding Photo Shoot Ideas for a Romantic Bohemian Wedding

Brides choosing a romantic bohemian wedding theme will want photos that are quirky and a little non-traditional.

Outdoor venues offer a great, natural background for wedding photos. Plan to take photos at sunset, when the sun’s light can provide just the right atmosphere for a romantic pic. Take advantage of wooded areas that offer natural arbours for picture opportunities. A teepee at the water’s edge, as shown here, is the perfect backdrop for stunning photos.

Those who opt for a barn or other rustic setting should seek out hay bales for use during the photo shoot as well. Ask for photos that involve bridesmaids assisting the bride with her veil or her bouquet, a first look for the groom, or perhaps the father of the bride.

Ceremony Decor for a Romantic Bohemian Wedding

Romantic bohemian wedding decor can run the gamut of several decor ideas. Some brides opt for a more rustic decor that is inspired by a farm venue, while other decor styles incorporate macrame, draping floral decor, or even drapery across arbours for the ceremony.

Greenery is also important for a romantic bohemian wedding. Many brides choose succulents, which make beautiful centrepieces. Some brides see a landscape of draped greenery such as ivy. Still, other brides may opt for flowers and greenery that is in season at the time of the wedding.

Some brides utilise a celestial theme when considering decor. They use lots of candles for a romantic glow, but add Milky Way patterns or even cut-outs of the moon – perfect for photo opportunities that say “I love you to the moon and back!”

Outdoor Wedding Ideas for a Romantic Bohemian Wedding

Consider an outdoor wedding. A backyard setting offers the perfect outdoor venue, with plenty of natural flowers and greenery as a background. Some may choose a rustic barn venue or even the grounds of a state park with a cabin onsite. These rustic venues can simply be outfitted with an arbour draped in greenery for the ceremony.

Romantic bohemian weddings often take place at lakes or even on the beach. The water as a part of the background offers a natural backdrop for photos and adds to the romance of the day.

Budget for Romantic Bohemian Wedding

A romantic bohemian wedding need not call for a large budget! Brides typically want a scaled-down style, so the budget can be scaled-down as well! Brides often opt for a simple wedding dress; at times, the dress is merely a knee-length gown that need not be expensive. Grooms will wear a casual outfit as well.

Decor depends upon one’s venue. Outdoor romantic bohemian weddings capitalise on the natural beauty of the venue. Brides add rustic benches for guest seating, and the couple may be married under an arbour. Brides hosting a Romantic Bohemian wedding can make their own invitations, and find decor for the reception at a flea market or second-hand store.

Island-inspired bohemian wedding

Western Australian wedding pros Heart Strings & Pretty Things, Hello Love, and Olive Farm Designs teamed up to create a sensational editorial shoot aimed at couples seeking a romantic island feeling for their wedding… an escape with their closest family and friends. Tina Shawal Photography was there to capture the magic and it sure was beautiful!

From Olive Farm Designs – “Our main priority was to evoke a young organic feel throughout the shoot with pockets of carefully thought out details that gave balance, warmth & layered textures. We wanted to compliment the surroundings and consciously kept to natural tones, however pops of colour were introduced with the flowers, makeup & accessories for variety & interest.

To set the scene Sarah from HeartStrings & Pretty Things worked closely with Elli from Lime Flowers & Holly from Hello Love to create simple yet beautiful settings for our couple, from the timber-framed arbour with striking blooms & macramé backdrop, to the amazing table setting by the beach & the teepee decorated with twigs & feathers found on the shore. We included subtle hints of boho inspiration by adding imprinted arrows to the wedding cake created by Amy from De La Rosa Cupcakes, handcrafted hats from Kate & Abel, as well as keeping the couple both barefooted however including hand beaded lace foot jewellery for the wedding ceremony.”

From Olive Farm Designs – “Tash from The Articulate created water coloured stationery all written by hand & Pheobe from The Library Dress was so inspired by our vision that she created the dress just for the shoot. Our makeup artist Brook from The Pretty Parlour went with loose beach wavy hair that went perfectly with the handmade flower crown in pink & blush tones created by Olive Farm Designs, completed with natural, understated makeup to highlight the models features & a bright lip.

Taking the shoot to another level, we decided to incorporate lingerie from Karolina Couture Lingerie & ended the day with the couple playing in the water. The shoot was captured by talented Tina of Tina Shawal Photography & the behind the scenes video by Ethan Ho – Film & Photo.

We wanted to show the beauty in keeping things simple, organic & personal. From the shoot you have a great sense of the kind of couple we had had in mind during out creative discussions.  It’s so easy to go overboard when it comes to styling a particular theme so we wanted to strip things back & let our surroundings speak for itself.”
