Art Nouveau Wedding Inspiration at the old Michigan Theatre in Detroit

LYNSEY LUE PHOTOGRPAHY

Today’s wedding inspiration shoot took place in downtown Detroit, but abounds with olde world elegance that compliments the architecture of the venue that serves as its backdrop, the old Michigan Theatre. The rich color palette of peach, emerald and gold, and Art Nouveau details bring together this breathtaking vision of modern romance…..

Art Nouveau Wedding Inspiration with a Modern Industrial Vibe

Here’s photographer Lynsey Lue to tell us all about it…. “Detroit’s visually rich and fascinating architecture and history reveal a city that once was, and in so many ways, still is breathtakingly beautiful and inventive. As a history-loving photographer exploring the city, I was drawn to investigate the former Michigan Theater in downtown Detroit. Outside, the building appears to be a typical 1920s office building with an attached parking garage. Inside the parking garage, driving up the parking ramp to the third floor, I was overwhelmed and inspired by the sudden appearance of the former Michigan Theater’s soaring ornate plaster ceiling. It’s a truly magical juxtaposition to stand in the middle of a utilitarian concrete parking deck between a grand two-story colonnaded theater lobby on one end and what once was home to a grand stage. The grandeur of the past is still very present within this Detroit gem through its faded plaster ceiling and remnants of the rich red theater curtains hanging by the stage area.

For all these reasons, I just knew my debut styled shoot had to take place here, in the former Michigan Theater. So, I approached Aimee from Modernly Events with my intent to plan a styled wedding shoot in the building and my ideas for a fresh and modern Art Deco style. We collaborated closely to make our vision come to life, choosing to take the shoot in the direction of the early twentieth-century Art Nouveau movement of incorporating arts and crafts, nature, and organic lines and shapes. We brought in flowing and abstract geometric and floral motifs, as well as brass cranes for a whimsical accent and a little bit of nature.

The design came together with the help of so many different vendors, most of them residing in the Metro Detroit area. Visually, Curtsy and Bow Events brought us color with their beautiful floral arrangements. The linens from Luxe Event Linen dressed our table in the perfect way. Sweet Heather Anne‘s artistry gave us a cake that was beyond beautiful. Pops of color were tied together with the stationery, created by the talented Invitations by Caitlin. The dress that turned our model into a goddess was provided and styled by Detroit Bridal House. Our models were adorned with details provided by Everistta Bridal, Lavaliere, and Cyberoptix. All the details came together to make one of my favorite secret Detroit locations come to life. It brought me back to a time that was modern and romantic, whimsical and structured, all by the hands of some wonderful creatives.”
