Oak Park Wedding at Cheney Mansion

Elise and Suzannah crafted a wedding day that was completely unique and personal to their relationship. Elise, an academic with an incredible sense of style, and Suzannah, a talented artist, chose Oak Park’s Cheney Mansion for their intimate wedding, which featured flower men in lieu of flower girls, and a heartfelt song played by Elise’s father to kick off the reception. Meaningful handmade details, lovely florals by Busy B’s Floral, and gorgeous photos by Bokéh Studios make this a day we won’t soon forget!

Our Love Story

We met on Tinder, which is both funny and embarrassing. Elise was my first and only tinder date. Elise had made it clear that she wanted to be proposed to in New Orleans, so when we planned a trip spontaneously, I knew I had to pop the question while we were there. I convinced her that it wasn’t happening on the trip, but one morning we took a bottle of wine to Audubon Park with the ring in my pocket. I proposed on a bench in front of a herd of ducks and she said yes. After the proposal, I told her we had dinner reservations in the French Quarter with some friends that were in town. When we got there, I surprised her with a full parade, complete with parasols, a huge brass band, police escorts and her parents! She was very surprised, and it was a day we’ll never forget.

Our Wedding Vision

We had a lot of fun (and a little bit of struggle) picking and choosing which traditions we wanted to use in our wedding. Being a lesbian couple, we were able to make up our own traditions, and leave behind the patriarchal tendencies of the wedding industry.

Our ceremony is one that we designed for ourselves, it involved using the sunlight from the moment we are married to create a piece of art that we’ll have for the rest of our life together. In lieu of flower girls, we chose two of our flamboyant male friends to act as flower men down the aisle. Also, Elise’s dad, Glen, played a song for us on his guitar to kick off our speeches. We designed and printed our invitations ourselves, and much of the decor was designed and built by the two of us.
