DIY Wedding | Harmon + Haley

“Haley and Harmon are the picture perfect couple. Haley sings at their church, loves to decorate and is beautiful inside and out. Harmon loves the outdoors but not as much as he loves Haley. Their faith keeps them grounded and it’s truly evident in the way they live. It was a blessing and an honor to be a part of such a beautiful event!” – Photography By Micahla Wilson

What is your favorite wedding day memory?

My favorite wedding day memory was when my now husband called me “Mrs. Carson” when we were alone for the first time after we said our “I do’s.” In that moment, I realized this is what this whole day is about. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of things and the structure of how everything is supposed to go. It’s easy to get sidetracked from what is really important on that day. The most important thing to remember is that whole day is a symbol of your love for each other and that you are saying you want to spend the rest of your life with each other.

What did you DIY for your wedding?

I guess the three words that would best describe our wedding would be: romantic, rustic, and bohemian. First, I have to say that Pinterest was my best friend throughout this entire process! I love things that have a raw look and feel and Pinterest helped me find ideas to accomplish that look. Not to mention, I also had an amazing team of family and friends that truly helped make my visions come to life on our wedding day! My soon-to-be Aunt {who also happened to be my wedding coordinator!} and was able to help me create everything I presented to her with. Together, her and my florist were my right hand ladies that seemed to be able to create anything into existence!

We knew we wanted brass and silver candle sticks of all shapes and sizes to incorporate at the ceremony and the reception sites. We scored some gorgeous candle sticks and candelabras after searching through a bunch of antique stores and we were able to collect tons of them! I loved the romantic look of taper candles set in gold wine bottles where the thick wax was allowed to melt and run down the sides of the bottles. So for this DIY, we asked around for empty wine bottles and spray painted them a metallic gold color. Then we found the best fitting, champagne colored taper candles and pre-burned them weeks before the wedding. This created the romantic thick wax look I was so in love with! My coordinator made a wonderful full table cloth based on a picture I found {of course, on…Pinterest!} It was filled with scrap pieces of white, cream, champagne, beige, grey blue and blush fabrics of all different textures. It was truly an amazing piece that I will cherish and keep forever. For our ceremony backdrop, we created a greenery wall decked with all sorts of leafy vines and other greenery that was full of flowers of all different shades of pink. The flower laced vegetation draped down over and along the backdrop where we stood with the minister. It was huge and perfect! After the “I do’s” were said, we walked back down the aisle under a sea of silk champagne streamers. I loved how it made the whole recession fun and joyous! We left these streamers on the ends of the aisles with a hand written note that said “wave your wand and shout ‘hooray’ as the bride and groom walk your way!”

For our reception, we made fabric garlands to accompany the pallet wall we made to be our photo booth! The photo booth props included handmade flower crowns, paper props and vintage hats. I had a chicken wire photo board of wedding pictures from my Parents’ and Grandparents’ wedding days, as well as, wedding day pictures of my Fiancé’s family. Lastly, we DIY’d “thank you for coming to our wedding” favor for our guests to have at the reception, so what other perfect way to do that than with flower and vegetable seed packets so people could “Let Love Grow!”? We glued each seed packet to a popsicle stick and stuck it in a vintage wheel barrow with some crates we found at antique stores. Finally and probably my favorite DIY piece at the reception, was the amazingly stunning ribbon chandelier that was created by the staff of Sainte Terre where our reception was held.

One other fun thing I did was a bridesmaid reveal party! I had handmade flower crowns along with “Will you be my Bridesmaid” balloons that I presented to each of my girls. Their bridesmaid dresses were also handmade. I knew I wanted a specific color and style for them, so we set out to fabric stores to pick a dreamy blue chiffon to overlay a silky grey-blue hue satin fabric. My flower girl dresses were also handmade with a patchwork of different white fabrics for different pieces of the dress. My favorite of all the fabrics was a sweet white dotted swiss fabric.

Something old, new, borrowed and blue?

My something new was my gorgeous Watters gown! The lace top of the dress was custom made from scratch. After I purchased the dress, I went to some fabric stores to pick out lace for the top and a nice underlay. I couldn’t decide between two gorgeous lace fabrics so I got both and the alterations staff at Stardust built the top, sleeves and Queen Ann collar with one fabric and then cut pieces from the other and added them on top of the other lace fabric. It was so intricate and turned out beautiful! My something borrowed was a hairpin that was my mothers. My sister got married in May, two months before me, and wore it in her hair at her wedding also. My something blue was a blue hue in the jewels on my Jessica Simpson heels I wore in the wedding. My something old was an old handkerchief that I placed in my bouquet during the ceremony.

Any advice for brides currently in the planning process?

My advice to other DIY brides is to make sure you have a team of people to help bring your ideas to life! If ever you think something may be too expensive to buy or hard to find, figure out a way to make it yourself! Also, before you start getting really deep in the planning process, get in your mind exactly what you want and the look you are going for. I absolutely love them, but with websites like Pinterest and other blogs with gorgeous weddings on it, it’s easy to change your mind on big things that could alter the look of your wedding. Decor can get expensive when you start changing things up! Even still, they are some of the most perfect places to get some incredible ideas from to incorporate in your wedding! -Haley, the bride
